To Give Back Is To Give Forward

There is nothing “back” about giving, it is all about forward.

Acknowledging that we should always be ready to give is a big step in our journey. From early on, we are taught two diametrically opposed things: to be competitive and to always try to be the best and stand out, and then conversely, to be compassionate and giving.

The balance of these two concepts is precarious and difficult to manage at an early age. As we grow older, society puts such pressure on us that we somehow forget to “walk and chew gum at the same time.” Becoming a giving human being is somehow against many of our objectives.

Many think that giving back is about charity to others when, I believe, it is really about giving yourself immense joy. I know this sounds selfish but it is not. Just think back for a moment on how you felt when you gave something to someone and your gift made them happy, less hungry, safer, loved, counted, less lonely, inspired, grateful, hopeful, more human…

Imagine a world where our actions were geared towards giving because of the joyful state itself.

See what I mean about giving forward?
