The Black Swan

I thought I would get one of my very favorite blogs out of the way, right off the gate…The Black Swan.

I believe that most of us tend to ask the “why me?” question… when faced with an unfortunate occurrence, and seldom when we hit the jackpot. We are blind to the unpredictable.

Do ya’ll want to talk about last year’s COVID, how about the violence? The election?

Nassim Taleb’s, fabulous book The Black Swan, The Impact of the Highly Improbable is a great read when you want to understand somewhat the nature of unpredictability…and the events that catch you by surprise.

Mr. Taleb rightly points out that we, “society” are obsessed with facts and try to predict outcomes based on these data-driven facts. We must understand that all of the fact seeking and number crunching at times does not prepare us for unpredictable events that happen, good or bad.

So why do I like this blog so much, because my darlings…it is about resilience.

Do you have what it takes to bounce back after being caught off guard? Can you be creative and get yourself out of the pickle? Are you enlightened enough to be grateful for the experience because you know it made you better, stronger, wiser, and a totally more charming person? Will you be weary not to be caught off guard again?

Can you read the signs? Not the evident things that everyone can see or is talking about. But the subtle signs in something that doesn’t quite seem right…

Do not fear The Black Swan, tame it, conquer it, expect it.
