“You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus.” Mark Twain

We see the world filtered through our beliefs about everything. Another way to say it is: What we bring to the table has everything to do with what we garner from it. Or another way: "When an ass peers into a mirror, you can't expect an apostle to look back out." (That's ass, as in hoofed mammal, but take it anyway you like.) The more you're open to unfamiliar sights, smells, sounds and ideas (about painting? politics? religion? race? sexuality? you name it), the richer you will be, and the abler to respond to life's roller coaster ride.

People (we) hold onto things that are based solely on perception, without any clue of reality...and they (we) do not use imagination to help themselves (ourselves) out of the rut.

Try shattering your POV one day, it feels like you are falling off a cliff…then, all of a sudden you realize you are still in one piece.
